Black Mold Health Signs, Treatments, and Cures

[Feb. 16, 2002]

          Q. What are the health signs to look for caused by black mold? What are some of the treatments? Are there cures for black mold? and can it show up in the lungs and on the liver?

          A. If you mean Stachybotrys mold when you use the Stachy mold nickname of black mold, here are some thoughts. The most tell-tale sign of a human being affected by Stachybotrys mold infestation is loss of brain functions, such as having trouble thinking and remembering, and of feeling distance or disconnected from the world around oneself.  The health symptoms of Stachybotrys mold are very similar to Alzheimer's disease.  In fact, if someone is starting to shown signs of Alzheimer's disease, the first step would be to thoroughly mold test the person's home and work environment for the presence of Stachybotrys. Because Stachy is rarely airborne, you need to do a very thorough physical inspection, including INSIDE hvac, walls, ceilings, floors, attics, crawl spaces, and basements to locate mold deposits that should be directly sampled for laboratory mold analysis by the Mold Inspector Laboratory.  If a person is experiencing possible health effects from Stachybotrys mold, the first step for that person and all other residents is to leave the home or workplace until thorough mold inspection and mold testing has been completed. If Stachy causes brain damage, the brain damage is usually permanent and irreparable.

Symptoms of Black Mold

[Jan. 31, 2002]

          Q. What are the symptoms of black mold?

        A. Although thousands of mold are black in color, the term black mold usually is considered by people to be a nickname for the toxic Stachybotrys mold. Because Stachybotrys directly destroys brain tissues, people exposed to high levels of Stachy mold will have health symptoms similar to Alzheimer's Disease such as headaches, loss of memory, difficulty in thinking and reasoning, and feeling "disconnected" or "distant" from the world around them. Black Mold and Health Problems

[Dec. 12, 2001]

          Q. I have have found visible mold in our house, it is black. There are other places that I suspect it might be also, places in our ceiling where water damage has been done. The reason that I am needing is some answers is because of my children's health. Our oldest who is almost 4, didn't start having health problems until we moved into our present home. Since we have lived here she has had constant ear infections, bronchitis, developed bad asthma, developed allergies and has been hospitalized twice this year with pneumonia. Our youngest who is 1, also has constant ear infections and bronchitis. The doctors have no answers for me about why my kids are always sick. Could it be the mold making them sick? What do I do?

          A. The possible mold symptoms certainly are possibly caused by the mold contamination you see in your home. Their frequent, serious health problems and the evidence of both present mold and past water problems suggest that you should completely test your home as soon as possible, including mold testing inside the walls, above ceilings, beneath floors, inside hvac equipment and ducts, attic, and basement/crawl space.  You can either use our Do-It-BEST-Yourself mold test kits with laboratory analysis, or hire a Certified Mold Inspector. Because finding and safely removing the mold is going to take some time, if there is any mold-free place you can temporarily move your family, such a move should be done as soon as possible for the health well-being of your entire family.
